Spring Colors: Wet n Wild Silk Finish lipsticks in Hot Red and Light Beige Frost

I think I have found the perfect drugstore pocket-friendly lipstick combo for Spring and what makes me even more happy is that its just under $2 [under $1 in USA] :)

Wet n Wild is a favorite brand of mine and I really wish that they would have more presence in Canada - really, we miss you. I dream of a day when I can walk into my nearest drugstore and get all those awesome LE collections... <sigh> <sigh> <sigh>

Anyways, this is what Wet n Wild has to say about this lipstick range: "Enriched with conditioning ingredients of Vitamins A & E and Aloe Vera for moist-looking lips."

They seem pretty intent on not making absurd claims and I respect them for it. None expects magic in a lipstick bottle- at least not for $2. Thank you Wet n Wild, for respecting us consumers.

My Review:

Wet n Wild says its a nice non-drying somewhat hydrating lipstick - and I agree. Both the shades are easy to apply, doesn't need any lip balm and has medium pigmentation that is buildable.
Hot Red is a cool toned red that is would suit most skin tones. This one has no shimmers and applies semi-sheer on the 1st swipe.
Light Beige Frost is a frosty silver-shimmery peachy pink -again suits most skin tones. The frost effect in this one is not harsh and is good for a day wear. On non-pigmented lips, the peachy tones would come up more. On pigmented lips like mine, this can easy be your MLBB shade with a shimmer.

Hot Red on top, Light Beige Frost under

Why I like these lippies:
- Easy on pocket
- Easy on lips - no need for lip balms
- Applies semi-sheer on 1st coat; can build up the intensity if needed
- No harsh scent or taste
- Average lasting power of 2-3 hours; no patchy stains or shimmers left behind

Light Beige Frost
Why I wouldn't recommend:
- Not for people who love long wearing lip colors.

Why I think this is a perfect spring lipstick combo?
Whip out that Red for rocking your day or go peachy nude with a shimmer with these lipsticks. To add some wow to your look, you can layer on the Red and then dab the peachy pink on the center of your lips.
This is a combo that I feel would work for most skin tones. Pink and its variations are usually very skin-toned based and finding a universally appealing color combo can be hard.

Hot Red
Overall: I can't think of many reasons why you shouldn't buy this. Hot Red is especially a wonderful color - if you are afraid of Reds, this is something to start with as it applies semi-sheer. The combo of Red and Peachy Pink, makes this duo a great day wear option that doesn't hurt your pockets.

Makeup for $2: Jordana Brow & Eyeshadow Powder Single in Brown

I don't buy eye brow powders because I am a bit too lazy and also I kinda use my eye pencils or eye shadows for brow defining. So I have absolutely no idea why I would have bought this product. But having had this, I must say I like this as a Brow Powder- though I really don't get why Jordana added Eyeshadow part to this.

About the product from Jordana Website:
Brow & Eyeshadow Powder Single

Matte Finish

Intense Pigment

Dual Purpose Brow & Eyeshadow Powders

Made in USA

Available in 6 Shades. Price is $1.99 USD

My Review:

One of the few genetic goodies I inherited are a pair of decently shaped adequately thick eyebrows, so I can get by even without too much brow plucking and coloring. So, I don't usually worry about brow coloring or shaping, I just get by with my eye pencils. However, I'd heard a lot of bloggers rave about this product so I was curious to see how this would work.

I must say - I am pleasantly surprised. One major reason why I stay away from stronger brow coloring was that the brow pencil and wax gave a very heavy feel and sometimes triggered my migraine. But this felt super light weight. Funnily enough, this was more easier to apply than a brow pencil and wax, because the application felt way more even and controlled. Of course, you need a brush or a spooly, but this gives a much better defined and natural brows than a brow pencil.

Another funny thing is that the very thing that makes this a good brow powder makes this an average eyeshadow - low to medium pigmentation. This is not too intensely pigmented [as you can see], which makes it ideal for brow coloring but the texture and the pigmentation makes it a very average eyeshadow. I found this very difficult to blend.  This should be used as an eyeshadow if you're going for one of those 1-product looks!

They have some more shades so finding a good match should be easy. Check out my tips on eyebrows here

Overall: For $2, I think this is a good product from Jordana. If you are learning to play with your brows and don't wish to buy a $20 Anastasia product, this could be  good alternative for you.

$2[ -ish..] Makeup: NYC Liquid Lip Shine in Rivington Rose

Have you ever felt frustrated after buying a product that was raved by bloggers/vloggers and wondered if its you or if its the product or if its just your luck in getting a bad egg?

If so, nice to meet you, cos that sometimes happens to me. When I bought this gloss after checking out so many reviews, some by acclaimed bloggers, I was under the impression that this is superbly pigmented, and non-sticky. Instead..ah, well..let me not spill the whole stuff here.

Have you heard the gossip? There’s a new gloss in town! NYC New York Color Liquid Lip Shine is getting headlines with seriously high-drama color at a seriously low price. Pure pigments give a 3-D effect that’s off-the-charts glossy. Tons of hot new shades, from preppy nudes to bold statement hues – all for less than your weekly fashion magazine.
Price: $2.49

My Review:

My translation against what NYC claims:
- seriously high-drama color : What? Really? I don't think I have seen any High Drama color in this range. I am pretty sure, there are no shocking pinks or Violets......

- Pure pigments give a 3-D effect that’s off-the-charts glossy: Translated to -"Expect lots of shimmer and glossy finish to give the lips a shine" No idea what Pure Pigments mean!

So rounding up, all NYC claims is - they have a decent shade range of glossy lippies.
Which is good, cos that is exactly what they deliver.

These lippies are often at sale, so you can get them at around $2. I have not yet tried a non-shimmery gloss from this range, but most of em look shimmery. So, just in case this shade is an odd-one-out , I  am not going to review this range as a whole, just this particular shade.

Rivington Rose is a dusty rose-y peachy shade with lots of shimmer in it. To get the peach tones, you have to have nude non-pigmented lips. On my lips the pinkish tones are more prominent, so it comes off as a dusty rose shade. The shimmers look nice and not at all OTT. I am not in general a fan of shimmery glosses, but in this lip gloss, the shimmers don't stay back and clutter your lips once the color begins to fade.
See how my natural lip color peeks through very easily? And people call it highly pigmented!

Application is a breeze with the doe foot applicator, though its a tad bit too long for my preference. The gloss has a very candy or toffee-ish scent but no taste. I cant pinpoint the exact scent but I don't mind it as its not too strong.

In spite of what I read in blog-world, these are not super pigmented. They are averagely pigmented, but not enough to deserve being called "highly pigmented". The color applies Semi-sheer as you can see.

What I don't really care about this gloss is its weird stickiness. This is not sticky as in like  "glue-on-lips" sticky. It kinda drips.. I don't know how to explain, check the pic. Its very weird cos in the pic I'd only 1-2 layer of product which I think is decent enough. Reminds me of Phoebe and her Sticky shoes song! :)

I'm sorry if this grosses you out, but I'd to show the pic..

Other than that, packaging is so so, staying power is also so so [1-2 hours max!] and I think thats about it.

Overall: Nothing to rave about, nothing to complain too much. For the price, these are decent. They give a good shine, a glossy feel and have a nice range of standard colors.

Spring Colors: NYX Butter Lipstick in Taffy

I have already reviewed NYX Butter Lipstick in Hunk here, so I won't go again over how smooth this is, or how comfortable this feels on lips. I love these lipsticks, more for how they feel on lips than for their pigmentation.

I should have been disappointed with Taffy because NYX describes it  as a Pink Mauve, while as you can see, this is more of a very cool toned bubble-gum pink.
Even after swatching it, I didn't expect to like it and was almost on the point of adding it to a future Giveaway [stay tuned! :)] . But after trying it on my lips, I changed my tune - this is not a too-brightly-cool-toned-pink that makes it hard for warm-toned ladies like me to wear.  This actually looks good on me and due to its blue undertones, makes my teeth look whiter.

I think Taffy is a beautiful day time color for almost all skin tones. Its not too intimidating and as with other butter lipsticks, you can always wear it more sheer if you want to. Don't buy this for the staying power as it stays only for 2-3 hours at the max but then if you expect staying power out of a lippie that calls itself Butter Lipstick, well........

Overall: Not a Love at First Sight, but still a Love. If you're afraid to try out any of those cool toned barbie lipstick shades, this could be a good start for you.

What Not to Buy: 2 Useless Lipglosses- E.L.F Super Glossy Lip Shine in Juiced Berry and Bonne Bell Lip Lites in Cherry Berry Kiss

I know - people may love sheer glosses, people may even love sticky sticky glosses, people can even love sticky no-color glosses - I know, I accept, cos in this wonderful world of ours, there is always someone who loves something [no, not going to sing a Dean Martin song here].

All I am saying here is - I don't. And this review, is for people who think like me & that is that a gloss that looks pigmented but is not and is also sticky is a waste of money. Do you agree? No? Then, well.. that's how life is! :)

Now going to the 1st offender, E.L.F Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15 in Juiced Berry:

Look at that glossy tube..look at that luscious color that it kinda promises...

Now look at the goop that came from it...looking like something out from a glue box.. I am being a bit harsh, considering ELF doesn't promise a lot of pigmentation. But still I feel kinda cheated. However, if it was just a reddish very lightly tinted gloss, I could've still used it to give a plumper look to my lips, but it is very very sticky!

Now that in my opinion, is too much. A no-color gloss that is a bit too sticky - is kinda totally unlovable for me. The point is, why would I waste money buying this useless stuff, when I can get better options if I pay a $ or more.. for e.g. Essence's gloss is $2 approx and they are superb. ELF has other glosses which perform much better. Also I think other shades from this same range has much better pigmentation than this one, which makes the stickiness almost bearable.

And now, presenting my second offender, a pricier Bonne Bell Liplites in Cherry Berry Kiss.

1st of all, the packaging is a bit unwieldy. The tube is longer and the wand is also weirdly longer than normal, making it a bit hard to apply.

As with the ELF one, looking at the tube - one imagines a juicy glossy color. Also Bonne Bell promises to give some color and glossy effect but the highlight of the product is apparently the taste!

Weird or what! Who buys a gloss for the taste? [If you're now thinking, "Well you did", I didnt! I didnt know this was being sold for its taste! Honest!]

Look how long that wand is!

The one thing I can say in support of this gloss is, it is not as sticky as ELF one. But thats it. Its a bit pricier than ELF , which makes it hard to justify buying a product that basically doesn't do anything for your lips. As with ELF, the other shades in BB LipLites seems okay, with some of them being claimed in Blog World as MAC dupes. So I guess I just got stuck with the loser of the bunch!

DISCLAIMER: If you have non pigmented pale lips, these may be good sheer gloss options for you. In which case, you might think I am being nonsensical. Even so, don't you wish its better to have a pigmented gloss you can wear sheer, than have a non-pigmented gloss that you cannot build up at all??

A case of mistaken identity: Milani Color Statement Lipstick in Candied Toffees

So the story begins when the heroine [ahem...] walk into a Walmart store and is thrilled to find that it has Milani products.

Taking her sweet time, she checks this lipstick and that, and after considerable deliberation, she decides to get Candied Toffees - a nudish pinkish shade based on the color displayed in the bottom part of the gold casing.

Look at that nudish coral-ish pink-ish shade displayed!
Alas, as she reaches home and pulls it out with all the eagerness to test it, she finds that she'd brought home a changeling - coppery bronzy metallic shade instead of the creamy nudish pink that the casing color promised her....

With a bitter curse on the botched marketing job, she flings the lipstick away & runs out into the darkness.... [[a.k.a the washroom]...

Do you expect this color after seeing the casing? Or do you think I need an eye exam?
But the story has a happy ending... she learns to love the bronzy shade after she finds that it suits her very well, and they both live happily ever after [except in Winter when she goes after darker matte-er shades]..

If you're yawning and cursing my story telling skills, well, I have nothing more to say except if you're in Canada you can buy this from Well.ca here - http://well.ca/products/milani-color-statement-lipstick_89090.html . Price is around $6CAD.

Regarding other minor technical details of the story, the lipstick:
- has a nice golden packaging
- has a totally misleading color displayed in the bottom
- has a fruity but nice scent
- has no taste, no irritation
- has a nicely moisturizing texture and smooth application
- has a goodish staying power [around 3-4 hours with food]
- matches most complexions but would be best fit for medium to deeper skin tones

So, thats all, dear folks... thanks for reading and Ciao! :)

Spring Colors: Tanya Burr Lip Gloss in Exotic Island

I follow Tanya Burr in Youtube - I like her cos she seems pretty down-to-earth, cheerful and bubbly. So when I heard that she had come up with a new lip gloss range, I was pretty interested in trying it out. After some hemming and hawing and wondering if I should shell out $12 for a lip-gloss that looks a $5 product, I decided to take advantage of a feelunique offer and try it.

This is what Feelunique claims about the gloss:

If you're hankering after the perfect catwalk-inspired pout or want an everyday high shine lip gloss, take a look at these gleaming lip glosses from Tanya Burr.

Offering a state of the art finish and performance, each Tanya Burr Lip Gloss comes packed with moisturising ingredients to feed and hydrate the lips. Choose from rich beautiful shades in crème and shimmer finishes and each tube comes with a handy lip brush applicator for a glossy 'wet look', with long lasting shine.

My Experience:

Exotic Island is a bright fuchsia-ish pink without any shimmer - its the kind of color that suits almost all skin tones and brightens a dull complexion.

Before I start raving about the things I love about this gloss, let me get out the bad stuff 1st...  The packaging sucks big time. Seriously. I'd expected something much more prettier & creative from someone like Tanya. Its plain ugly. The only good thing is it is functional and thats it!

Next on my grumble list is - the $12 price tag and the fact that this is not available so easily. I wish this came at a more drugstore-friendly price  like $7 or $8... well, I am nitpicking now.

Now to what I love about this. Just look at my lips. I mean, look at it. Thats 2-3 swipes of the gloss. The effect remained for around 30-45mins after which it settled into a glossy balm-y finish but it still left my lips super hydrated for another 1-2 hours. Awesome or what?

I edited the area around my lips cos I had some mustache - But the gloss effect is true and untouched!
This was the 1st time I actually felt that my lips were looking sooo - luscious & glossy -you know! I am hooked. If all her other glosses works the same, then I have a new HG lip gloss brand. If not for the tacky packaging, this feels like a very high end gloss!

Tanya doesn't make any nonsensical claims like long stay or intense pigmentation. These perform pretty much what they say - awesome finish, glossy effect and hydration without any lip balm.

Overall: I love it. Go get yours -seriously you need this!

Ah Hombre! Skin Care & Makeup for Men: Looking good without looking Beautiful! :)

Blessed as I am with innumerable male cousins [did I say Blessed? the word is Pestered!], I'd found very early in my teens that any talk of makeup or beauty or shopping would just make my brother & cousins go - "Yuck, Gal talk!booo" This insensitive but standard Macho attitude has been the norm for such a long time, that I was thrown off balance, when a few years back my 1st cousin asked me what he should do to look good for his marriage. I didn't know he cared as much for his face as he did for his 6-packs!

Since then, I have been like Agony Aunt for my male cousins when it comes to all things skin care & beauty. These are some tips and tricks that I have collected over the years; feel free to share them with the men in your life & let me know what they think of it.

Shopping - Avoiding embarrassment & wrong products

Some men find shopping hard cos of all the teasing and the possibility of losing their macho status. Some men are clueless when they go for shopping - skincare is a scary world for them. My suggestions are:

- Best & Easiest: Get your wife, girlfriend, sister, friend -whomever you trust- to buy what you need. If you don't know what you need, get suggestions from them. Girls have this magic power of being able to talk to Sales girls and read labels...

- Online research: Check out Men's website like askmen, esquire, GQ etc for suggestions. One of my cousins had this problem when he didn't know where to start and what to trust. Well, you gotta search dear.

- Online shopping: Many websites have Men's special area now. Sometimes, Beauty section is listed under Women but they have Men's products listed.

- Men's Saloons: Ask at your fav saloon. They might carry some products or they might be able to help you to find what you need.

How to find what I need or what should I get for him?

Its sometimes difficult for us ladies, who are so immersed in the world of skincare & beauty to understand how complicated it all looks to most guys. My brother once asked me - what the heck is the difference? I was trying to explain what cleanser, soap, exfoliant, toner and astringent are. And he just got more and more confused. So here are some basic stuff that every guy can use and some tips on finding it:

Cleansers:
Guys need as much pampering of their skin as girls do. But the differentiating factor is presence of chemicals that can cause facial hair loss or bleaching. As a general principle, it is good to avoid any harsh or whitening cleansers. Go for products with labels like "Gentle" or "Soap Free". If you read in the directions that the product does not have to be washed off with water, that is yet another good indicator that it is a gentle enough cleanser.
If you still find it hard to buy a good cleanser, head to the babies section and get a pack of baby wipes.

Exfoliants or Scrubs:
This is something most guys need - a good exfoliant to remove all the dead cells and make skin look good again. Key to finding a good scrub is to look for good natural exfoliants like Apricot or Walnut. St.Ives is a brand that has some good scrubs.

Sunscreens:
All guys - well all humans - need this. Go for a higher SPF factor - i.e. SPF 30 or above. For most guys, this is the only cream that they need.
Apply this after your cleansing and exfoliation.

Acne Treatment:
If you have a teenage cousin or brother, you can be sure that they are going to need this. Since most guys prefer a one-step acne fix, my suggestion would be get them a good acne face pack or acne cream. Another option is to get them Tea Tree oil which they can apply directly on their face. The Body Shop has one which I've tried and liked.

Under Eye Darkness:
Many guys have this problem - while we know that a good eye care regime will help it, I found that it is no use to expect guys to apply more than 2-3 products at a time. Since most of the above products are applied at day time, go for an eye cream that can be applied at night. If you can get a good face cream, gentle enough to be applied under-eyes, that can also help.

I find it best to use a gel formula for night-eye-care as its fast absorbing. If you cant find anything, here is a quick fix you can do.
Cut a piece of a raw potato and rub it gently under your eyes at night.

Lip Care:
A good lip balm is essential for everyone. However, make sure you're getting an un-tinted one. Many lip balms nowadays are tinted. So if you are checking a lip balm, check if they mention any 'color' or 'shade'. If no clue,  Also, I found that guys prefer to use lip balms in a jar as I guess, a lip balm tube reminds them of lipstick :)

Makeup:
If you said "What???? No way", I would say you're behind the times. Guys, like us, need makeup - just not the same stuff. So here are some stuff, you can get or suggest:

 - Foundation: Most guys prefer the powder format, since it is easier to apply. If you're a newbie, then buy a low or medium coverage powder foundation. Go for a matte effect foundation for a cleaner finish. Lucky for you, most drugstore powder foundations are low-medium coverage, so pick any that you like. Rimmel has a Stay Matte powder foundation that is a fan favorite.

- Bronzers: Okay, this is probably more useful for really pale guys in Summer. Make sure you get a matte non-shimmer bronzer like NYC bronzer in Sunny

Concealers: This is probably the most important item a guy would need in his makeup stash. My suggestion is to get an exact skin color match and not go for the highlighting concealers. Revlon's PhotoReady concealer is a good creamy medium coverage concealer that can cover those tired under eyes, any pimples and may be that shaving scratch.

As for other makeup products, I have not yet seen any guys needing or using blushes, lipsticks or eyeliners. I am not judging you, so if you need one, go for it :)

Some Tips on Grooming [ Espl for guys who don't care for the above stuff]

Here are some simple tips for guys on looking well groomed:

1. Clean Hair, Clean Face and Clean Fingers [and toes] - adds a universal appeal to any guy's looks. A dirty finger nail can detract so much points from your looks, so even if you didn't go for that manicure, make sure you get everything out of your fingers.

Also if you apply any hair products, make sure its not super visible or sticky. After applying any hair products, run your fingers through it before styling it. If stuff sticks to your fingers, you've too much of it in your hair. You can use a towel to remove those extra gunk.

2. Trim those facial hairs - there is a difference between adorably cute in a day old beard and looking like you've slept for 2 nights in a local bus station. This is especially important if you've a job or if you're newly onto a job.
If you're into beards, keep it trim and neat.
If you're into moustaches, again keep it trim neat and shapely. You don't want to look like Charlie Chaplin or a local bandit.
If you're into clean shaved look, well - that's the safest look for any professional guy.

3. Apply some lip balm on those chapped lips; wetting your lips is not = kissable lips. In fact wet lips are ugggghhh. So if you're meeting your girlfriend or going for lunch with you boss, massage some lip balm into those dry chapped lips for 2-3 mins. Do it softly and you get nice looking lips.

4. Hairy like a Gorilla? If so, either shave if you want to wear short sleeves or shorts, or wear long sleeves to make sure that hairy arms don't scare people. This is especially true if you;re working in a multi-gender work place.

5. Pimples?Acne? Scratch marks? - Cover it up. If you've an open pimple, make sure it is clean and non-puss-y. If you don't wish to apply any powder over the pimple, a cleaner way is to apply a band-aid over it.

6. If you've dandruff, either take care of it by using dandruff treatment or avoid wearing dark single color shirts where the flakes may be more visible.

Hope these tips help you and let me know if you have any suggestions too! :)

Disclaimer: This is based on my experience and when I say "Most guys" or "Guys" I mean guys I know or have known. I am not saying this applies to everyone, so if you feel this is nonsense, feel free to

Essence Bloom Me Up Shimmer Powder - why you should buy it if you see it!

Since this is a Limited Edition product, I am not going to very in-depth review.  I am just going to summarize why this is a good purchase if you find it in your local Shoppers or else where.

Look at that cute flower design - won't that look pretty at least for a while? :)

Essence's packaging is nice and sturdy.

When you think Highlighters, do you think a subtle glow? If so, this is a great option. Because of the pink-ish undertones mixed with Silver, this would be best suited for Cooler skin tones, but as this is a subtle highlighter, almost all skin colors can use this.

2 ways of using this powder - 1. As a highlighter on cheeks, forehead, nose etc 2. Over your foundation and under your face powders for a subtle allover glow for that day out

Once Blended out - the finish is very subtle as you can see.

I Missed you last Halloween and Winter... NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick in Bruised

How I wish I'd found this lipstick last Halloween or Winter! I would have really enjoyed wearing this dark vampy gothic-style color.Since I'm so into brighter lip colors now, I am keeping this aside for coming Winter. However, this could be a year-round lippie for your wannabe Goth or Wiccan.

NYX's Extra Creamy Round Lipstick is not a very easy-to-use lipstick but they are cheap and they feel comfortable on lips.
For $4 USD, they are pretty easy on the pocket but their easily breakable & very creamy formula makes it a bit difficult to use them. This one I got, was already broken in transit, though it came in bubble wrap and all.

NYX says Bruised is a deep violet but I would say its more of a deep purple with red under tones , very similar to a Black Cherry kind of color.

They are not long wearing due to their creaminess but being a dark shade, Bruised does stain lips a bit. Which is good, if stained lippies are your thing. Now, after trying this out, this is what I feel about the color:

- Not for the faint hearted but then if you are, you wouldn't buy this in the 1st place... but if you bought it hoping this can be sheered out into a wearable purple, I am sorry for you. I couldn't sheer it out, if you did -let me know how you managed that!

- Not something you can apply directly from the tube as the application can easily get patchy. I suggest a concealer brush to get good coverage and even application

- Wear this matte by apply-blot-apply-again-blot-again - this is how I found it best to wear this color. It looks awesome if worn matte. But here is a word of caution - its a terror to remove from lips, if worn matte. Almost as difficult to remove as Lime Crime Velvetines were.

- Line your lips to avoid any possible feathering. This one doesn't but this is not a color you want to take a risk. Also, do your face makeup after your lips, if you're wearing this color as if by some chance it smears, it messes up everything very fast

Applied as sheer as I could with even coloring

Overall: This is not your everyday color. This is something you pull out for a special look - unless of course you're a Full Time Goth :) Formula-wise, probably not the easiest or most comfortable one around, but for $4 I think this is worth the money.

Dear Urban Outfitters - here, take all my money! [ A.K.A my April Haul]

Okay, I am exaggerating.. . But considering that I already bought a lot of stuff in April [check my haul posts here and here, ]I think it was very inconsiderate of UO to force me into spending more $$$ by offering free shipping on any purchase amounts.

Don't you see the devilishness of the scheme? See, if I had to do the normal wait-till-i-find-stuff-interesting-enough-for-$50-&-free-shipping  , then I usually buy like once in 2months or so. But now, it was like, I didn't have to wait. I could just buy goodies as they popped up in the new arrivals page. And they did.

Without much more delay, here are the pics...

As always please let me know if you wish me to review any of the above - I'll anyways be reviewing them in sometime but if you ask, I'll do it sooooon... :)
